Lumineers messed up my speech

I wanted a true celebrity smile so I chose Lumineers. I thought they were the best way to get a smile that would get noticed. I got them in June and they look okay. They don’t look as great as I thought they would because they are somewhat thick. It seems that there isn’t enough room with my tongue with the veneers because since I got them I speak with a lisp. I have taken the Lumineers back to the dentist I got them front. He said that some adjustments were made but I still have a lisp. In fact it doesn’t seem that my speech is any better now than it was before the adjustments. Someone in the dental office implied that it might take a while to get used to speaking with the veneers but I thought they were supposed to function like natural teeth. If that’s the case, why am I having such a problem with my speech? Can I get these things off and just go back to back to my teeth. Maybe I would be happy if I could just get braces and have then whitened. Thanks. Lenny

Lenny – Since Lumineers are often placed without any preparation of your natural teeth, it takes a lot of skill to place them without them looking or feeling too bulky. If your veneers were placed without tooth preparation, a small amount of enamel might need to be removed to help the veneers fit properly.

If your dentist has already made adjustments to your Lumineers, it is possible that he is having difficulty with properly fitting them or properly bonding them.

We recommend that you get a second opinion from an accredited cosmetic dentist with experience placing Lumineers. Trained cosmetic dentists have the skill to adjust Lumineers or your natural teeth so you get beautiful results. If your dentist hasn’t been able to achieve the right look and feel with your veneers, it might be best to have someone else examine them.

Depending on the cause of your lisp, the adjustment might be as simple as preparing your teeth. In some cases, Lumineers will need to be remade to ensure they fit correctly. Meanwhile, you can practice speaking with your current veneers to see if you can make adjustments that limit the sound of a lisp.

If you want a second opinion, schedule consultations with two or three cosmetic dentists. Take notes on what each dentist recommends to resolve the issue. This will help you make a decision on your provider and treatment method.
